Regarding the carbon footprint of airport ground services equipment, I am very glad that I have received a research paper on the effect of replacing aluminum alloy rollers by composite rollers in air cargo loaders.

This paper was jointly published by three scholars and presented at the International Forum on Shipping, Ports and Airports ( IFSPA 2022 ) held in The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. The paper reported that the non-metal or composite material rollers were found to be a more effective, environmentally friendly, more economical, safer and sustainable product than the conventional metal or aluminum alloy rollers. They have also found that by replacing all metal rollers on air cargo loaders operating at Hong Kong International Airport, tremendous carbon emission reduction can be achieved. In this area, it might be a good choice to replace the aluminum alloy rollers.

Ground Support Engineering Limited is currently responsible for the maintenance of over 200 air cargo loaders operating at Hong Kong International Airport.

Over the past 10+ years the primary supplier of replacement cargo loader heli-rollers to GSEL has been Easyroll Technology (Hong Kong) Ltd. During this period GSEL have transitioned from the use of aluminum alloy rollers to the smart composite product supplied by Easyroll.

GSEL carried out full technical approval tests (reference: TR-15-12) concluding significant benefits from using the smart composite roller (SCR) including higher durability and improved wet weather performance, together with the avoidance of metal to metal (aluminum) erosion on both cargo pallet and ULD base plates.

With over 10 years of in-service data we can confirm that the expected operating life of the SCR is close to double that of an equivalent aluminum roller and we have no hesitation in recommending this product to potential end-users.

Good news for today which is: our professional engineer did the estimation on easyroll and expected easyroll could be used for another 5 to 6 years more due to their life time cycle.
