(Aluminum Roller Vs. Smart Composite Roller)
We have been actively requesting a laboratory test to support the view that the Smart Composite Roller outperforms the Aluminum Roller product and we have now received a dynamic friction test report produced by the International authoritative testing organizations「Fugro Technical Services Limited - MateriaLab Division」that clearly shows an improved level of friction and associated ULD handling performance, particularly under wet weather conditions.

As mentioned in the textbook, metal-to-metal contact is not a good arrangement due to metal-to-metal wear, adhesive wear and surface damaged by oxidation.


In theory of Tribology, same metal with same crystal lattice type, same atomic plane distance and same electron density. Those materials carry similar characteristics in electrochemistry. Their mutual solubility in same materials becomes greater. They easily bond together and cause wear damage. But metal and non-metal e.g. example Nylon, Plastic, Graphite etc., the mutual solubility is relatively small, the tendency to coherence of two materials is greatly reduced.


There are very high degree of adhesion or bonding capacity between two pure metals. Therefore, we should try to avoid using the same materials in making sliding friction system.
The wear of Aluminum and Aluminum carries different loading also has two different mechanisms. Minor wear or oxidation wear occured even in low loading mechanism, because of oxidation to the dense layer which is formed by the surface oxide film and finally to be ruptured and peeling off with some small flake.


The 6th generation product is made of Unique formula and tested by SGS(International accreditation laboratory) in 5 areas including Hardness, Taber abrasion, Dynamic coefficient of Friction, IZOD impact strength & Water absorption. Its service life is about 2.5 times of Aluminum rollers.


Three major performance tests our 6th generation products, were carried out separately including 360-hours non-stop simulation test to compare the service life against Aluminum roller.

Title: On site inspection of 1st and 4th generation Nylon rollers & Smart Composite Rollers
 in Hong Kong

It was surprised that the condition of our 1st generation Nylon roller(Blue nylon) is still in use and working properly while it has been using since July 1999. We estimated that the services life of these Rollers would be much longer than expected. Actually more than 10 years. In summary, wear resistance is good, but no Skid resistance and also Cost is even high in compare with Aluminum roller. This is why we need further development of new generation Smart Composite Roller
starting from year 2007.
During 2004 to 2007, 4th generation Smart Composite Roller(Black Smart Composite Roller) improved a lot in both Wear & Skid resistance as well as lower cost. Total rollers using in the Airport reached to 70,000 nos. but it still has room to further improvement in particular to the Stiffness.

has been launched and installed in first FMC main desk Loader in Hong Kong International airport. After conducting several on-site performance tests with favorable results, the Loader resumed it's duty in the Airport.

Jardine Air Terminal Services Limited is one of bigger ground support services company in Hong Kong International airport which is operated under Jardine Matheson Group. Over 1,032 nos. of 6th generation Smart Composite Roller were installed in their FMC main desk Loader. It represented a New milestone of EASYROLL's step forward to success.
